Our Far South

Kia ora teachers,

Early next year, as you and your class are preparing for the new school year, Gareth Morgan and his team will be heading south, to New Zealand’s sub-Antarctic islands, the Southern Ocean, and the icy continent of Antarctica. The team onboard includes the comedian and champion of sustainability Te Radar, prominent NZ scientists, and a selection of New Zealanders' from around the country.

The team’s goal is to raise New Zealanders' awareness of this beautiful unspoiled environment and the issues that it faces.

We want to support teachers who are interested in bringing an authentic interactive learning adventure into their classrooms. The topics and material will be suitable for a range of ages through Primary and Secondary.

We love Happy Feet

The arrival of Happy Feet, the emperor penguin, earlier this year to New Zealand shores captured the imagination of children throughout Aotearoa New Zealand and demonstrated a desire to know more about Antarctica, the sub-Antarctic islands, and the Southern Ocean. As a result, Our Far South has developed an extensive education programme to enable teachers and students to engage directly with the expedition and marvel as they learn together about hidden treasures south of Aotearoa New Zealand.

What's happening

Whilst onboard we will be exploring some important topics:

  • Biodiversity: The rich animal and plant life and why it is important.
  • Climate change: What is happening to the climate south of Aotearoa New Zealand, and what this means both for that region, and for us.
  • Managing Resources : how is the Southern Ocean and Antarctica governed, and what are the impacts of activities like fishing and tourism?

Get involved

During our expedition we will be regularly posting information and findings on our website and invite students, teachers, and other members of the public to participate in the journey. Unlike other projects, you'll be able to interact with the expedition as it happens, in real-time.

Here are some ways students and teachers can engage with Our Far South:

  • Ask crew members and scientists questions (through the website)
  • Classroom visits by crew members before or after the expedition.
  • Read blogs, watch videos, listen to podcasts
  • Follow Shackleton Bear's blog and ask him questions
  • Track where the boat is in real time
  • Enter our schools competition (5 - 18 year olds)
  • Read articles on the issues written specifically for the students and teachers.

Teachers Only

We will also be offering support for teachers wanting to incorporate the expedition into their lessons:

  • An extensive education section with vetted teaching resources
  • Fact and activity sheets to use in your lessons
  • Ask questions about topics
  • Curriculum links and compatibility
